The Celtic Nations T-Shirt, Ireland – Scotland – Wales – Iste of Man – Brittany – Galicia – Cornwall.
Celtic Nations are the territories where Celtic languages or Celtic cultures still exist. The term “country” here is used to refer to people who share a common culture and are attached to a territory. It does not mean “sovereign state”.
The six regions commonly referred to as the six Celtic states are Bretagne or Brittany (Breizh), Cornwall (Kernow), Wales (Cymru), Scotland (Alba), Ireland (Éire), and Isle of Man (Mannin). Each region has its own Celtic language, which is still used or at least once used in modern times.

Each region has its own Celtic language. In Wales, Scotland, Bretagne, and Ireland these languages are spoken all the time, while the languages of Cornwall and Isle of Man, although spoken in modern times, have gone extinct as a language of community communication. However, in these two regions, language restoration movements have enabled these languages to produce a certain number of new native speakers.
Ireland, Wales, Bretagne and Scotland have areas where the Celtic language is spoken by the majority of the population – these are called the Gaeltacht in Ireland; Y Fro Gymraeg in Wales, and Breizh-Izel in Bretagne. Often these communities are located west of the “country” and in isolated mountainous areas or islands. The word Gaidhealtachd historically used to distinguish the use of Scottish-speaking Gaelic region (Highland) from Scots-speaking region (Lowland). More recently, the term became the Gaelic name of the Highland board district (including places where no Gaelic language is used). Therefore, a more detailed term sgìre Ghàidhlig is currently in use.
In Wales, Welsh is a core subject (required), which all students must study. In addition, 20% of Welsh students attend Welsh medium schools, where they teach entirely in Welsh. In the Republic of Ireland, all students learn Irish as one of the three core subjects until the end of high school.
